Hey! My mother is a racist bigot too! I wonder what the common thread is there?
I finally did it. Today, after a couple of years of regular coffee drinking, I finally asked someone at work to show me how to use the coffee maker.
I have appreciated the kindness of a few people in the office who regularly make the coffee. Occasionally however the morning coffee is gone by the time I get around to wanting a cup or, more rarely, I want a second cup and the pot is spent.
I have, on these occasions, feigned attempts to brew a pot by getting the bag of beans out of the fridge and glancing at the packaging. I'll take the grinder and filter basket out of the maker and look at them for a while. Then, I'll put it all back and give up. They never taught us how to do this at Mormon-sponsored scout camp.
In these cases, I just go without. It wouldn't be fair and I wouldn't feel right asking someone else to make ME a cup of coffee. They don't work for me. Even if they did, I'm a big boy, I can (or should) make my own coffee.
Well, today I just broke down and confessed my shortcoming to a coworker. "Kelli", I glanced at my shoes sheepishly, "C-c-can you show me how to use the coffee maker? I almost always have a cup when you make it but I feel stupid acting like you are my personal Word of Wisdom slave. I admit it, OK? I don't know how to operate a coffee maker. I'm so ashamed."
"There, there, Pete. I'll give you a lesson this afternoon. There's no shame in this. It's not your fault your mother didn't raise you right."
Next step... figure out how to get an espresso machine installed at the house. Maybe I'll tell Donna it's an air compressor or an atomic particle accelerator or something.
Filed under - CoffeeJust brewed myself a couple of cups at work. Damn, that's good stuff, particularly with some heavy whipping cream (that half-and-half stuff is for sissies!) and a packet of sweetener.
I've only been drinking it a few years, though, and what's weird is that, when I started, I needed 4 packets of sweetener. Now 2 is too much! Isn't that odd.
The more I drink coffee the more I want it to be more like coffee. Dark, hot, bitter.
I take a little milk or cream now and then and sometimes I'll add a sugar free flavor squirt. But for the most part the coffee-er the better.
When he was 20 a buddy of mine was living in his zealous grandparent's house. He installed a coffee maker in his room. He was promptly tossed out on his ear. I have never and probably will never understand this rabid hate(fear) of coffee.
As a gentile, I've never really minded the fact that I have to brew the coffee for the Mormons in the office. The one that really gets me are the Mormons who are good at drinking the beer, but don't know how to buy it from the store.

The kitchen turns into an oasis of "all that smells good" when the coffee grinder is going.
I'll admit it - I never knew how to make coffee until just a few years ago. My Mormon folks didn't raise me right, either. They're racist, bigoted and homophobic, but they're my cute little parents who didn't blink at the coffee machine at our house. Who knew that Mom drinks coffee AND with Splenda and cream?
Thank heaven for those small miracles that start with coffee.
