In Other Words, Fuck Off

This letter is my formal resignation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and it is effective immediately. I hereby withdraw my consent to being treated as a member and I withdraw my consent to being subject to church rules, policies, beliefs and 'discipline'. As I am no longer a member, I want my name permanently and completely removed from the membership rolls, directories, mailing lists, etc of your church.

I have given this matter considerable thought. I understand what you consider the 'seriousness' and the 'consequences' of my actions. I am aware that The Church Handbook of Instructions says that my resignation "cancels the effects of baptism and confirmation, withdraws the priesthood held by a male member and revokes temple blessings" I also understand that I will be "readmitted to the church by baptism only after a thorough interview".

My resignation should be processed immediately, without any waiting periods. I am not going to be dissuaded and I am not going to change my mind. I do not believe the tenets of Mormonism. I do not want to be considered a candidate for fellowshipping or re-conversion.

As my friends and neighbors, church members are welcome to visit my home anytime without need of appointment. They should also have no need to fear persecution or confrontation when visiting my home. Church leadership should be aware, however, that I am not interested in church members contacting me in any official or assigned capacity.

I expect the respect afforded me as a parent where situations involving my children are concerned. Private interviews with my minor children are not acceptable without parental consent. I do not consider discussion of personal matters by adults with my children to be acceptable under any circumstance. Violation of this request will be regarded as a very serious violation of trust and will be handled as such. Discussion of inappropriate topics with my minor children by adult church members will be dealt with in an appropriate legal manner. Inappropriate topics would include, but are not limited to, sexuality, sexual behavior, sexual expectations, asking the child to keep a discussion, topic or belief secret, encouragement to disobey parents, negative or inappropriate opinions about others or those with differing beliefs, racial or bigoted beliefs, political matters, or any other topic typically considered inappropriate in a fiduciary or adult-minor relationship.

I expect the matter of my resignation to be handled promptly, with respect and with full confidentiality. This request includes the expectation that information relating to my resignation not be shared with anyone in my household, neighborhood, place of employment, etc except for those obviously required to be included for clerical purposes. I cannot emphasize this strongly enough. I will consider any communication with my family members, neighbors, co-workers or anyone else regarding my resignation a serious breech of trust and confidence and I will not hesitate to seek legal recourse in such a case.

After today, the only contact I want from the church, or church members acting in an official capacity, is a single letter of confirmation sent to the address below to let me know that I am no longer listed as a member of your church.

Sincerely,
Pete Dunn
